Australian consumers online shopping activity continues to soar and is growing at a much more rapid rate than traditional retail. To back this up, the Forrester latest report enlisted the digital habits of consumers: which technology brands they prefer to engage with; changes in mobile usage, and new trends in online shopping.
According to the report, 68% of Australian adult shopper bought online for physical goods this year as compared to 71% in Europe and 74% in the US. A study was conducted in 20 countries with over 100,000 participants.
“This coming shift is less mysterious than you might expect; this disruptive turning point in cutting-edge technology behavior is the logical extension of billions of years of evolutionary history,” McQuivey and Reitsma explain.
21% of Australian shoppers used their smartphones to shop for physical goods online, and 11% used tablet. However, personal computer or desktop remains as the most preferred medium to e-commerce.
Furthermore, the report also said that 42% of iPhone users use some form of wearable technology, while only 29% are Android users.
It is notable that Australian shoppers are turning away from traditional banking payment method when shopping online. Most are taking advantage alternative payment method which 61% used PayPal, 35% BPAY, 11% Afterpay, 8% Visa Checkout and 8% Masterpass.
Retailers need to update their marketing strategies and integrate technology to ensure continued growth for the coming years. Without a doubt, consumers are favoring convenience, fast and secure online transactions.
